The Story of the Sea Cow

Long before the bridges, resorts, and coastal highways of today, the Georgia coast was a wild frontier of marsh, oak hammocks, and isolated barrier islands.

In the 1500s, Spanish explorers sailing north from Florida brought cattle, horses, and hogs to the southeastern coast. Over the centuries, some of those animals escaped or were intentionally released on remote islands where they could graze freely. Protected by vast salt marshes and separated from the mainland by tidal rivers, generations of cattle adapted to life along the coast.

These hardy animals became known as the "sea cows" of the Georgia coast.

For hundreds of years, feral cattle roamed islands from Cumberland to Ossabaw and many smaller islands in between. They survived hurricanes, droughts, mosquitoes, and summer heat. They grazed maritime grasslands, wandered beneath ancient live oaks draped in Spanish moss, and became part of the unique history of coastal Georgia.

Early settlers, planters, and fishermen often used the islands as natural pastures. Roundups were conducted by boat, with cattle driven across tidal flats and loaded onto barges for transport to mainland markets. The practice continued well into the nineteenth century and, on some islands, into the twentieth.

Today, most of those coastal herds are gone. Development, conservation efforts, and changing land use gradually removed cattle from many islands. Yet their legacy remains woven into the history of the Golden Isles and the people who made their living from the land and sea.

Sea Cow Butcher Shop & Gourmet Market celebrates that heritage.

Our name honors the rugged coastal cattle that once roamed the Georgia barrier islands and the generations of ranchers, fishermen, farmers, and merchants who helped build this region. We believe great food tells a story. Whether it's hand-cut steaks, fresh local seafood, Georgia-grown products, or Southern specialties, every item reflects the traditions of the coast we call home.

From the marshes to the mainland, from the cattle pastures to the fishing docks, the story of the Sea Cow is the story of Coastal Georgia.
